Beacon of Freedom Award

The Beacon of Freedom Award is presented annually to a book that introduces American history, from Colonial times through the Civil War, to children in a historically-accurate and engaging manner.

Congratulations to Laurie Calkhoven, author of Will at the Battle of Gettysburg, which is our 2014 Beacon of Freedom Award Winner.

Who Sponsors the Award?
The award is a joint program of The Williamsburg Regional Library and Colonial Williamsburg. The Disabled American Veterans Patrick Henry Chapter 34 provides funding.

Who Selects the Winner?
A committee of members from the above three organizations selects each year's nominees. Students in 4th-8th grades from participating schools in James City and York counties evaluate each title. Students from each school choose the final winner.

How Can I Be a Student Judge?
Talk to your school's media specialist. You must be in 4th-8th grade.
