Currently, one of the fastest growing fiction genres is the romance novel. In 1999, over 18% of the reading-age population read at least one romance (41.4 million people). The Romance Writers of America define a romance as a fictional work having two elements – a central love story and an "emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending." Once these criteria are met, the story can be set in any place and time, and may be humorous and light or dark and suspenseful. There are many subcategories of romances – historical, contemporary, inspirational, time-travel, fantasy, etc. Many romance authors write have titles in several of these subcategories.
