SCIENCE FICTION & FANTASY
Speculative Fiction at the Williamsburg Regional LibraryThe science fiction and fantasy genres, collectively known as speculative fiction, encompass an incredibly diverse range of literature. Alternate history, high fantasy, hard science fiction, cyberpunk, contemporary fantasy, post-apocalyptic fiction, time travel, magical realism, and utopian fiction are all specific sub-genres which fall under the umbrella of speculative fiction. While fantastic literature and mythology are as old as literature itself, the beginnings of science fiction are often traced to the publication of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein in 1818. The writings of H.G. Wells and Jules Verne around the turn of the century further increased the popularity of speculative fiction. Authors are constantly looking for new ways to envision our future, to re-envision our past, or to create altogether new worlds to explore. The following list of books includes selected works of speculative fiction from the 19th century to the present day, with an emphasis on contemporary titles. A representative title is included for each author on the list, but the library holds several titles by most of these authors. If you need assistance finding any of these books, or other works of speculative fiction, please ask a reference librarian.
