VIRGINIA IN FICTION
Since the earliest days of English settlement, Virginia has been a fruitful subject for writers. As one would expect, most of the early writing featuring Virginia was non-fiction — typified by books such as John Smith's The Generall Historie of Virginia (1624)* and Robert Beverley's The History and Present State of Virginia (1705)*. By the late 17th century though, ballads about Virginia were being sung, and, in the 18th century, fictional works such as The Life of Charlotte DuPont, an English Lady; Taken from Her Own Memories, Giving an Account of How She was Trepan'd by Her Stepmother to Virginia (Penelope Aubin, 1736) and Voyages, Dangerous Adventures and Imminent Escapes of Captain Richard Falconer (W.R. Chetwood, 1745) were being published in England. The 19th century saw a rapid increase in the publishing of fiction set in Virginia, including works such as The First Settlers of Virginia (John Davis, 1805), The Knights of the Golden Horseshoe (William Carruthers, 1845), Philip Randolph, a Tale of Virginia (Mary Gertrude, 1845), and The Ocean Martyr: Or the Hunter Spy of Virginia (Sylvanus Cobb, 1850). Following the Civil War, Ellen Glasgow, of Richmond, Va., was one of the first Southern writers to attempt to portray the realities of life in the South. Since then, many novelists have set their work in Virginia. The following list contains works of fiction whose setting, and sometimes main subject, is Virginia. These works include novels, mysteries, romances, thrillers, and stories of contemporary life. These books can be found in the fiction collection, arranged by the author's last name. For help finding any of these works, or other Virginia Fiction, please ask one of the reference staff.
