POSITION TITLE: Materials Receiving Volunteer

DIVISION: Technical Services

SUPERVISOR: Acquisitions Assistant

LENGTH OF COMMITMENT: Six months (preferable)

TIME INVOLVEMENT: Variable.

POSITION SUMMARY: Volunteer helps check and prepare newly received materials. All materials are prepared at the James City County Library.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Unpacks boxes of new library materials onto book carts; finds and saves packing documents. Checks condition of library materials for damage or defects. Checks title against vendor packing list. Delivers unpacked library materials on carts to acquisitions receiving assistant. Labels audio-visual (AV) materials. Attaches stickers to AV materials. Cuts up boxes for AV processing.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to recognize and save important packing documents. Ability to accurately check condition of materials. Ability and willingness to understand and carry out oral and written instructions. Ability to work independently and to work well with others. Willingness to undergo training.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Position involves bending, reaching, lifting up to 25 pounds, pushing book carts filled with library materials. Minimum age 16 (unless approved by supervisor).
