POSITION TITLE: Book Talk Volunteer
DIVISION: Adult Services (Reference)
SUPERVISOR: Adult Services Supervisor
LENGTH OF COMMITMENT: Six months (preferable)
TIME INVOLVEMENT: Monthly 1 hour sessions, plus preparation time.
POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Adult Services volunteer supervisor, this volunteer visits retirement and adult care facilities to talk about books and reading. This outreach program is intended not only to share books with participants, but also to encourage them to talk and share their own stories.
MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: responsibilities includes but are not limited to: selecting fiction and nonfiction works of potential interest to the residents, with their input if possible; reading the works, noting passages of particular narrative or stylistic interest; preparing summaries that capture the flavor, focus, strengths and weaknesses of the work; presenting the work to an audience, including describing the story, characters and setting, and reading short passages, if applicable.
QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to speak comfortably before audiences ranging from 10 (most common) to 50 (rarely) people. Skill in retaining and organizing information, and structuring it into a narrative flow to generate interest. Ability to direct conversation, ask questions and personalize the story to the interests of the audience. Booktalkers must appreciate the special needs of the elderly population, and work comfortably with unexpected interruptions and distractions.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Minimum age 16 (unless approved by Adult Services volunteer supervisor). Scheduling will be done in conjunction with the activities coordinators of the various facilities.
