POSITION TITLE: Shelver

DIVISION: Collection Services

SUPERVISOR: Circulation Services Director

LENGTH OF COMMITMENT: Six months (preferable)

TIME INVOLVEMENT: Variable.

POSITION SUMMARY: Under the direction of the Circulation Services Director, the Volunteer Shelver assists in sorting and shelving library materials and maintaining neatness and order at the Williamsburg and James City County facilities.

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES: Sorts and shelves library materials. Shelf reads to maintain order. Assists in establishing neatness within the library.

QUALIFICATIONS: Ability to compare names and numbers, resulting in a working knowledge of the Dewey Decimal System. Ability to accurately shelve library materials. Ability and willingness to understand and carry out oral instructions efficiently. Ability to work independently and to work well with others.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS: Position involves bending, reaching, lifting up to 25 pounds, pushing book carts filled with library materials and climbing stairs. Minimum age 16 (unless approved by Circulation Services supervisor).
