(back to Special Thanks)FRIENDS of the Library is an organization dedicated to making our libraries a better place for both staff and patrons. It is run by a volunteer Executive Committee responsible for promoting interest in our libraries, sponsoring cultural programs for the community, and providing funds for special services and grants.
Grants to the Library - 2008
Every year the Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library returns thousands of dollars to the library to support programming and to purchase materials. The Friends Board asks the Director of the Library for recommendations and then reviews applications submitted by the various departments of the library at the end of each year. Below is a brief description of the 2008 grants to the Library.
- Mystery Writers Panel $2,045.00
- Update Opposing Viewpoints Series $2,350.00
- Update Automotive repair Manual Collection $2,000.00
- Update Literary Criticism $3,000.00
TOTAL ADULT SERVICES GRANTS: $9,395.00
- Jamestown 2007 Project $7,610.00
- ALA Alexander Hamilton Exhibit $4,768.00
TOTAL PROGRAM SERVICES GRANTS: $12,378.00
- Youth DVD Title Updates $6,800.00
- Summer reading 2008 $9,600.00
TOTAL YOUTH SERVICES GRANTS: $16,400.00
Other
- Director's Recognition Fund $250.00
- VLA Institutional Membership $2,528.00
TOTAL OTHER GRANTS: $2,778.00
GRAND TOTAL: $40,951.00
Funds come from annual used book sales, ongoing sales at the book nooks in each library, and financial support from annual membership dues. Membership includes a monthly newsletter, first look during annual book sales, and a tax deductible membership fee. Currently the Friends have over 1000 members.
