Circulation DepartmentFrom July 2006 to June 2007, we checked out 1, 224, 520 items and registered 7,163 library users.
Information for New Patrons To get a library card, bring a picture ID to either library's Check Out desk. Most patrons use a driver's license, but you can use a utility bill, lease agreement, or other correspondence to show current address. Children may be identified by a parent or guardian with picture ID and proof of current address. One library card entitles you to check out and return books at either location or the Mobile Library Services Vehicle.
All Virginia residents are issued complimentary library cards.
You can also apply for a card online.
Reference and Youth Services librarians are happy to assist you in finding materials or use of the public access terminals.
Your library card entitles you to check out as many as 40 items at a time, including audiobooks, CDs, CD-Roms, DVDs and videotapes. Exceptions include visitor cards or new cards being mailed to verify address. Most titles circulate for three weeks; some new books have seven-day circulation. Adult videos, DVDs and junior CD-Roms check out for seven days. Any item can be renewed twice as long as another patron is not waiting for that item. Please call 259-7794 with your library card in hand to renew items on your card. You may also renew in person or on your home computer (connect to our catalog, and follow the onscreen directions).
If items are returned late, overdue fines are ten cents a day for adult books and audiotapes, five cents a day for juvenile books and audiotapes, and fifty cents a day for videos, DVDs and CD-Roms. There are book drops available in both buildings to return items even when the library is closed. Please return items as soon as possible to make them available for the next patron, even if you are unable to pay the fine right away.
If you have any questions or suggestions about the Circulation department, please talk with any of our staff members at 259-7753 or at the Check Out desk, or ask for the Circulation Services Director, Peg Bradshaw, at 259-4063.
