'Musical Repercussions of the Civil War'
Professor Craig Parker's (Kansas State University) free illustrated talk will focus on “Dixie” and and its immense popularity during Reconstruction and later in the South (including how Sousa's Band reaped great rewards by playing it incessantly on their Southern tours). He'll also discuss his own diverse (and sometimes controversy-inciting) experiences with the tune from the 1960s to the present.. The program is presented in conjunction with the William and Mary Department of Music as part of its Music in American Culture lecture series.
The program is free of charge and no reservations are required.
