William and Mary Global Film Saturday Matinees

These films, intended for a family audience, are presented in partnership with the College of William and Mary Global Film Festival, the theme of which is Film and Youth.

Tonari no Totoro/My Neighbor Totoro (1988 / Japan / Hayao Miyazaki / 86m / G)

Two young girls, Satsuke and her younger sister Mei, move into a house in the country with their father to be closer to their hospitalized mother. Satsuke and Mei discover that the nearby forest is inhabited by magical creatures called Totoros (pronounced toe-toe-ro). They soon befriend these Totoros, and have several magical adventures. As one of anime filmmaker Hayao Miyazaki’s masterpieces, this film stands among the most heartwarming youth film experiences of all time.

After the movies, come over to the Williamsburg Community Center (across from the WRL) where you can be the artist along with other kids and adults. Together we’ll make communal artistic expressions of youth while enjoying music, munchies, and refreshments.  The artworks will then be displayed at the “community youth art” gallery opening: an event with more music and munchies that will close the 2013 Global Film Festival on Sunday February 17th (venue and details for gallery opening TBA).
