Curious about the value of an old book, map or manuscript? Your chance to find out its worth is coming soon! On Friday, October 27, 2000 at 7:00 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre, The Book Guys will be taping their popular radio program as the highlight of the Friends of the Library Annual Meeting.

The Book Guys have been broadcasting their informative and entertaining show weekly since January 1996. A wide range of topics are discussed, including everything from book collecting, appraisal of rare books, preservation of books and manuscripts, the cultural value of pulp fiction and small press publishing, great libraries and more. Co-hosts Allan Stypeck and Mike Cuthbert create loyal listeners each week across the nation. The show can be heard locally on NPR member stations WHRV and WHRO FM on Thursdays from 1:00 to 2:00 p.m.

Allan Stypeck is the President and founder of Second Story Books in Washington, D.C, a three-store domain of more than a million used and rare books. He frequently appraises for the Smithsonian Institution, the Library of Congress, the Supreme Court, the White House and numerous other Washington institutions, corporations, universities and private collections. He’s been awarded the Pillars Award by the Historical Society of the District of Columbia for his appraising work. Stypeck teaches a college credit course on appraising books and manuscripts at George Washington University. He has also appeared on PBS’ program Antiques Roadshow.

Mike Cuthbert is a seasoned pro in radio and music as well as a published short story writer. He has over twenty years in radio after an early career as a music educator and has worked large and small radio markets in both public and commercial formats. Like Allan, Mike has a brain filled with non-essential, but fun, facts and loves sharing them with audiences. He is currently the host of AARP’s Prime Time Radio, which is heard on many public radio stations across the country. He conducts the Falls Church Concert Band in Virginia as well.

Three free tickets to this informative and entertaining event are available for each Friends of the Library membership. (Become a member with this form!)  Tickets can be picked up at the Williamsburg Library Arts Center desk (259-4070) Ticket holders should be seated by 6:45 p.m, after which the event will be open to the public.
