Closing Dates at the Williamsburg Library

Temporary Closings to Speed Williamsburg Library
Toward the Completion of its Renovation

The Williamsburg Library will close four days in February to allow for critical construction work and moving of books into renovated areas of the library.

The library will be closed Thursday, February 5 in order to remove the 30-foot high, 100-foot long temporary wall that has separated the newly constructed check out and reference reading area from the rest of the adult section of the library. It will reopen on Saturday, February 7.

Following a period while new carpet is laid, the library will again close from Wednesday, February 18 through Sunday, February 22. This will allow staff to return to the shelves the nearly 67,000 adult fiction and non-fiction volumes that were stored in December to allow renovation of this space. On Monday, February 23 the entire adult section of the library will reopen.

The Arts Center of the Williamsburg Library will remain open during these periods for public meetings, programs, and the ever-popular AARP tax help program.

This will mark the beginning of the final phase of the Williamsburg Library's renovation. The majority of this final work will be in the Children's Library, which will be closed from February 18 through the end of April. During this time there will be limited children's library service from the Children's Book X-Press, the former library bookmobile, which will be parked in the Williamsburg Shopping Center parking lot.

The James City County Library on Croaker Road will maintain regular hours throughout these periods with all of their adult and children's collection available. Those hours are 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday through Thursday; 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday; and 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

The $2.5 million Williamsburg Library renovation began in December 1996. The library was open during the construction of its new section housing the circulation area and reference reading room. It closed for two weeks beginning December 17 to move into this new section and to store books in preparation for the current phase of its renovation. The renovation of all areas of the Williamsburg Library will be complete by late April.

"Our patrons have been marvelously understanding during all of this disruption," says library director Patsy Hansel. "If they can just bear with these upcoming four months of renovation we know they will be as pleased as we are by their newly expanded library," she said.

In summary: The entire Williamsburg Library will be closed on February 5, 18, 19, 20, 21, and 22. The adult fiction and non-fiction collection reopens February 23. The children's portion of the Williamsburg Library will be closed from February 18 until the end of April.
