A Celebration of Dogs at the Williamsburg Library

Every dog has its day... and, in this case, it's August 10 at the Williamsburg Library!  "Paws @ Your Library:  A Celebration of Dogs" is a special celebration during the dog days of August that features dog-related displays, presentations and other exciting events.  One of the highlights will be a presentation by some of the canine search-and-rescue teams that participated in the Pentagon effort following the 9/11 tragedy.

10:00 - 11:00 a.m. Merrimac Dog Training Club
This group from Newport News will present an obedience and agility demonstration. 
outside, weather permitting - otherwise in the Library Theatre
11:00 - 11:15 a.m. Langley Air Force Base Military Working Dog Demonstration
Did you know that dogs can be members of the military?  Come see some of the things these fascinating animals are capable of at this demonstration.

11:30 a.m. - noon Virginia State Police Canine Unit
narcotics demonstration

.. < Thor is a search and rescue canine from the Fair Oaks (VA) Volunteer Fire & Rescue. Thor was one of numerous canines who worked at the Pentagon after September 11th. He was also used extensively in the search for Chandra Levy. Thor and his handler will give a presentation at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, August 10 along with members of Greater Atlantic Rescue Dogs, Virginia Beach.

exhibit on the historical use of dogs in warfare - artifacts on display will include animal gas masks and enlistment papers - video footage of war dogs in action

Canine Freestyle Federation
informational display about freestyle dancing with dogs - videotapes of these creatively choreographed routines will be shown - possibly some impromptu dance moves
Room B

Williamsburg Veterinary Medical Association  
informational displays and discussions on the human-animal bond, keeping pets healthy and happy, and career opportunities in the veterinary medical field

a film festival of dog-related movies during the month of August - all are free and take place in the Williamsburg Library Theatre at 7:00 p.m.
FILM SCHEDULE

Patrons should note that while the event is intended to celebrate dogs, we ask that family pets be left at home for the day in consideration of our canine presenters.
