The Art of the Picture Book - An Exhibit
of Original Children's Book Illustrations

Illustrator Norman Bridwell,
a featured artist in the exhibit.
The Williamsburg Regional Library will be displaying an impressive collection of original children's book illustrations from a variety of illustrators from October 14 through November 30, 2000 at the Williamsburg Library's Arts Center, 515 Scotland Street in Williamsburg.
The exhibition includes work by Marc Brown ( illustrator of the popular "Arthur" series), Norman Bridwell (author and illustrator of the "Clifford" the Dog series), Caldecott winning artist David Wiseniewski and Caldecott honor winning artist Janet Stevens. Popular children's picture book illustrators James Ransome, Gail Gibbons, Steven Kellogg, Peter Catalanotto, Judith Caseley, Diane Stanley, and Alexandra Wallner will also be featured.

The beginnings for this collection developed from a retrospective show of illustrators who had visited the Williamsburg Regional Library to celebrate the opening of the James City County facility. Youth Services Director Noreen Bernstein and Youth Services Librarian Reba Friedrich contacted all the illustrators who had visited the library from 1988 to 1997 and coordinated the show. Every one of the illustrators contacted sent illustrations to be included in the display. The initial display of picture book art had such incredible popularity with the Williamsburg community that the Library Foundation allocated funding to purchase illustrations and formed the beginnings of the permanent collection at the James City County Library.

The Children's book art collection's primary philanthropist at the Williamsburg Library is Mrs. Helen Lee. Her gift was made in memory of her granddaughter, Susanne Sherville Austin, an aspiring illustrator. Featured on the plates that identify each piece is one of Susanne's illustrations.

The Williamsburg Regional Library is proud to present this incredible collection of original illustrations in its entirety to the Williamsburg community.
