The world-wide network of computers and on-line educational resources known as the Internet has revolutionized the way people gather information.
Some have called it a library without walls. Just like a library collection, some of the best resources on the Internet are aimed at the interests and needs of children aged two to 12. In its role as your one-stop location for information needs, the
Williamsburg Regional Library has gathered many web sites recommended by librarians and parents in our new Internet for Kids computer stations.

Children interested in using Internet for Kids need to sign up either in person or by phone at the Youth Services desk at either the Williamsburg or James City County libraries. Children can use the terminals for up to 30 minutes at a time.

Children using Internet for Kids will be directed to one of three sites on these computer terminals. At the library's own Kids' Corner (http://www.wrl.org/kids) parents and children can find links to more than 700 interactive web sites for kids including on-line reviews, a question of the month or links of the month. Kids' Corner also includes lists of the libraries' Battle of the Books readings and Summer Reading activities. At Berit's Best Sites for Children (db.cochran.com/li_toc:theoPage.db) more than 1,200 Internet sites are rated and grouped according to category and interests. Children can explore sites just for fun or conduct serious research on animals, history, holidays, science and hundreds of other topics. At the KidsClick! site users are also guided to categories of resources that have been selected by librarians around the country. KidsClick! (sunsite.berkeley.edu/KidsClick!) was created by a group of librarians at the Ramapo Catskill Library System in New York state, as a way to guide their young users to valuable and age appropriate web sites. As Internet for Kids grows, other appropriate sites selected by our librarians will be added to the computers. All of these sites are also accessible through Internet-accessible computers outside the library.

As with any resource, parents will need to be the final monitor of what their children are reading and viewing. As an aid in helping parents understand the Internet and the many wonderful resources available, the Williamsburg Regional Library staff will be conducting a Parents' Internet Workshop on October 19 at 7 p.m. in the Patricia Schell Memorial Room at the Williamsburg Library. The workshop is free and open to all, though reservations are required beginning October 2 at 259-4055. This workshop will help parents understand how they can best guide their children's use of the Internet as well as introducing the new Internet for Kids service at the Williamsburg Regional Library.
