James City County Community Room
Named in Honor of Grace and Stanley Kitzinger
The Williamsburg Regional Library is pleased to announce the naming of the James City County Library Community Room after Grace and Stanley Kitzinger. The naming is in recognition of a generous donation made by Mrs. Kitzinger in memory of her husband, Stanley. This gift will fund an ongoing series of programs to support cancer patients and their families, and cancer survivors. A plaque in the library will recognize Mrs. Kitzinger's generosity.
In addition to the planned series of programs on specific cancer-related topics, including coverage of the lesser-known types of this disease complex, it is hoped that more informal "networking" sessions for patients in the Williamsburg area can be scheduled in the Kitzinger Community Room. The purpose of these activities is to provide not only information but also encouragement and support for new and surviving cancer patients and to enable them to work more effectively with their oncology specialists.Access to library resources has been important to both Mr. and Mrs. Kitzinger. Mr. Kitzinger, a veteran of World War II and a career in the investment business, died of cancer in 1996, when research was only beginning to develop a treatment for his type of disease.
Mrs. Kitzinger, a science editor and writer for more than 30 years, moved from New Jersey to Williamsburg in 1998. Now a cancer patient herself, she has benefited from the cancer information resources provided by the library's Phillip West Memorial Cancer Resource Center. The materials available have proved invaluable in her understanding her type of cancer, new treatments under development, and in working with her oncology team.
