Parking at the Williamsburg Library (1988)
- Questions/comments/concerns about parking at the Williamsburg Library
should be directed to Mr. Jackson Tuttle, City Manager at 220-6100 or emailed to: manager@ci.williamsburg.va.us
Patrons have read and heard over the past year that the City has been deciding how best to provide parking in the municipal center area called the Northington Block. The library has been an active participant in these discussions with the City - with the goal of trying to provide the most accessible and ample parking for library patrons.
After much deliberation, the City has begun work on the design chosen by City Council. Completion of the work is expected to take up to a year.
As the recent renovation of the Williamsburg Library has shown, no growth comes without inconvenience. It is likely that the City's work on the Northington Block will result in such inconvenience and library patrons should prepare themselves for that.
While the library does not control the surrounding parking, we are doing all that is in our power to ensure that library operations enhance patron access. Steps we are currently taking include:
- Library staff have been using outlying parking since December 1997 during library hours to maximize patron access.
- Night drop boxes are conveniently located just a few steps from the library's main entrance off Boundary Street and at the Scotland Street door and will continue to be open during regular library hours.
- Patrons with access to personal computers can conduct searches of the library catalog without coming into the building. Call 259-4050 or 259-7720 if you have questions about accessing the library catalog, or visit http://www.wrl.org.
- Checked out items can be renewed over the phone by calling the circulation department. (259-4060 or 259-7733)
- Items in the collection of either the Williamsburg or James City County Libraries can be sent to the other library, often the same day.
The City plans to phase construction and alter parking time limits as needed to maximize access to municipal services.
The library staff sincerely appreciates the patience that our patrons showed as they watched their Williamsburg Library expand over the past 18 months. We hope that they will be equally patient as the City reconfigures parking over the next year.
Those desiring additional parking information on the parking plans should call the City Manager's office at 220-6100 or email manager@ci.williamsburg.va.us
