Williamsburg Regional Library's
New "Park Packs"
Encourage Exploration, Literacy

Lizzie and
Vallerie with Laurie Ziegler of Williamsburg Regional Library's Circulation Department
with some of the Park Pack items they used at York River State Park. |
Many children spend their spring break from school indoors with video
games, computers and television to pass the time. Not Lizzie Madison and
Vallerie Lockwood, both 9, of Williamsburg (VA). Instead, they took
some time out to enjoy the spring weather and learn about wildlife
using one of the Williamsburg Regional Library's new "Park Packs."
Park Packs are backpacks filled with field guides, nature stories,
park maps and tools for investigating the outdoors. Topics include birds,
reptiles & amphibians, fossils, water life, plants & fungi and night life.
|
| After checking the Park Pack out at the library, the girls explored
York
River State Park, catching minnows and investigating them up close with a magnifying
glass. They also learned how to identify different types of birds and
recorded the interesting facts they learned in the journal of the Park
Pack for other library patrons to see.
Park Packs are a joint venture of the library and
York River State Park, which
is conveniently located about ten minutes away from the library's
James City County building. A grant from the Friends of Williamsburg
Regional Library funded the project. The park has donated several items
for the packs. |

Vallerie and Lizzie inspect some of the creatures they have found and
researched.
|

Vallerie reads about the things she and
Lizzie have encountered in books provided with the Park Pack. |
The backpacks will be housed at the James City County Library on
Croaker Road. Patrons who wish to check them out from the Williamsburg
Library on Scotland Street may do so by placing them on hold. Check-out
time is one week.
The library's newest Park Pack, in partnership with Colonial National Historical Park
and the Virginia Association for the Preservation of Virginia Antiquities,
features the archeology of historic Jamestown, Virginia.
This pack is housed at the Williamsburg Library. For
more information about Park Packs, please call 259-7753.
