What do you do when predictions of a rainy holiday weekend spoil plans for the beach, the swimming pool, the amusement park or the marina? Many people chose to go to the library.

On the Tuesday following the rainy Labor Day holiday weekend staff at the Williamsburg Library and the James City County Library checked in a record 7,700 items, including hundreds of videos.

Peg Bradshaw, collections services director for the Williamsburg Regional Library system, attributes the large volume of check-ins to the predictions of bad weather. "It's always busy following a three-day weekend," she says, "but this weekend the weather was so lousy people seemed to have come in and stocked up on videos."

The Williamsburg area recorded more than two inches of rain over the Labor Day weekend according the National Weather Service.
