The
AARP TAX-AIDE PROGRAM at the Williamsburg Regional Library
begins on Thursday, February 1, 2001. Tax-Aide is
sponsored by the AARP
Foundation in cooperation with the Internal
Revenue Service. |
The Tax-Aide Program provides tax
counseling and tax preparation free of charge for low and
middle income taxpayers of all ages, with special attention
to those ages 59 and older. This year, an emphasis will be on
electronic filing with computers provided by the IRS.
The Williamsburg Regional Library is
one of only a handful of Virginia libraries providing facilities for
the Tax-Aide Program and has done so since 1983. The library is offering extended hours
this year and assistance on Saturdays as
well. Another new offering is the service of a mobile team of
Tax-Aide counselors who will provide tax help to citizens who have
difficulty getting to the library, such as those in nursing
homes. The mobile team will be offered during the month of March
only and appointments will be necessary.
Tax-Aide counselors are volunteers
who are certified annually after passing a comprehensive IRS
test. They accept no gifts or gratuities for their
services. They are prepared to complete all common forms and
schedules for individual tax returns. Business forms will
normally be limited to Schedules C-EZ, D and SE. Clients who are
delinquent in the filing of returns for past years will be assisted
only if they have all the required background materials available and
can be helped without inconvenience to others.
