Blue Lias, or the Fish Lizard’s Whore
A one-woman performance with music

"Fabulous ... powerful stuff," says poet Andrei Codrescu about the unique and complex interdisciplinary pieces created by musician, actor, and playwright Claudia Stevens. Ms. Stevens' newest one-person play, with music composed by Rome Prize-winner Allen Shearer, portrays Victorian fossil hunter Mary Anning and her colorful scientist contemporaries. Based on letters, diaries and other original sources, the play explores the intersection of science, religion and artistic experience as well as the role of women in science. And it celebrates the continuing quest to understand the origins of life on earth in this, the 200th anniversary year of the birth of Charles Darwin. The library, the College of William and Mary's Ewell Concert Series and the College's departments of Geology, Biology, and Anthropology jointly sponsor this performance.
