American Girl Author Valerie Tripp (Youth Services) - 2:00 p.m. - WL Theatre
Valerie Tripp created the original American Girls including Molly, Samantha, Felicity, Josefina, and Kit. She has also written picture books and easy readers. Ms. Tripp will speak about her books on Saturday, February 2 at 2:00 p.m. in the Williamsburg Library Theatre. Following her presentation, children are invited to participate in activities, enjoy lemonade and cookies, and have books autographed. There will be some giveaways. Books will be available for purchase through Narnia Children's Books. Families, including dolls, are welcome! Seating is on a first-come, first-served basis.  Entry procedure:

·      Admission is free

·     Every person in the theatre needs an entry pass.

·     One adult may accompany an individual child or group of children. Each child and the accompanying adult will receive a green entry pass starting at 1:00 pm.

·     Additional adults will receive a pink ticket and will be accommodated once all children are seated.

·     Green Entry Pass holders will be admitted starting at 1:40 pm. Admission will be done in batches starting with the lowest Pass numbers. 

·      Pink Pass holders will be seated if seats are available after all children are admitted.  Seating will done by pass number.

In fairness, no seats may be “saved” in the theatre.  Additional adults who are admitted may not be able to sit with a specific group.

Acclaimed poet Hermine Pinson recites and sings her poetry, accompanied by renowned guitarist Tomas Doncker and guest artists Harris Simon (keyboard), Terry Burrell (bass) and Billy Williams, Jr. (drums). The ensemble will perform selections from Pinson’s CD, "Changing the Changes," which includes original poems and songs created in collaboration with Pulitzer Prize-winning poet Yusef Komunyakaa. Film - Comedy - A Serious Business (episode #9 of Hollywood: A Celebration of the American Silent Film) - 1:00 p.m. - WL Theatre
In the silent era, comedy films were wildly popular with the movie-going public.  The development of this genre, from Mack Sennet's slapstick romps to the pathos of Chaplin's The Kid, is covered in this fun episode.  In addition, four of the most popular comedians of the era, Charlie Chaplin, Harold Lloyd, Buster Keaton and Harry Langdon are profiled. - FREE

 

Thursday Afternoon Film Series - Funny Girl (unrated, 1968) - 2:00 p.m. - WL Theatre
Barbra Streisand won an Oscar and became a major film star in this fine musical based on the life of Ziegfeld Follies comedienne Fanny Brice.  Funny Girl, which was nominated for 8 Academy Awards, was directed by William Wyler.  The popular musical score with such hits as "People" and "Don't Rain on my Parade" was written by Jule Stein and Bob Merrill. - FREE

Music In Your Life - A Conversation with Matthew Kraemer, Assistant Conductor of the Virginia Symphony Orchestra - 7:00 p.m. - WL Theatre
This popular series on music organized by Dr. Miles J. Schwartz returns.  Jointly sponsored by the Virginia Symphony Society of Greater Williamsburg and the Library, the series is free of charge.  Reservations are not needed.  Mr. Kraemer will discuss how one becomes an assistant conductor of a major orchestra as well as other musical musings. - FREE

Coyote Run returns to the Library with their powerful, eclectic Folk and Celtic music. Inspired by the rich heritages of Warrior, Celtic, Dramatic and Maritime traditions, Coyote Run's unique and rich storytelling style of music tells soaring tales of battle, blood, love, loss and the sheer joy of living. They play a wonderful fusion of instruments, including: guitars, mandolin, keyboard, accordion, flute, whistle, recorder, violin, bodhran, djembe, digeridoo, bagpipes, ukelele and cittern.
