John A. Stokes Author Visit (Youth Services) - 2:00 p.m. - WL Theatre
John A. Stokes, author of Students on Strike: Jim Crow, Civil Rights, Brown and Me, will speak at the WL Theatre on June 1 at 2:00 p.m. Mr. Stokes recounts his experiences growing up in the Jim Crow South, and his participation in the landmark civil rights case Brown v. Board of Education. His book, written for upper elementary and middle students, paints a memorable picture of African American life in Virginia before integration from the perspective of a young boy. Mr. Stokes's visit is made possible through the generosity of National Geographic.

A newspaper editor being sued for libel by a snooty socialite concocts a cockamamie scheme to impugn her reputation in this screwball comedy.  The elaborate plot, which includes a fraudulent marriage, is implausible, but the outstanding cast (William Powell, Myrna Loy, Spencer Tracy and Jean Harlow) make it work and create comic gold in the process. - FREE

 

3rd Thursdays @ Your Library: Houses of the Founding Fathers - 7:00 p.m. - JCCL Kitzinger Community Room
From Maine to Georgia, extraordinary men came together to sign the Declaration of Independence or write the Constitution. Where did they come from? In Houses of the Founding Fathers, historic architecture expert Hugh Howard tells the stories of 40 homes built by figures like Washington, Jefferson and Hamilton, and those of lesser-known men such as William Drayton and Jeremiah Lee. Along with beautiful photographs by Roger Strauss III, Howard opens the doors on the private lives of these public people. Copies of the book will be available for sale and signing. This Third Thursdays program is also a preview of the traveling exhibition "Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America," which is coming to the library at the end of June. - FREE

To hide the scandal, she allows the cousin (Miriam Hopkins) to raise the child as her own, which leads to decades of bitter recrimination between the two women. This fine “Woman’s Picture,” which includes wedding scenes, was adapted from a Pulitzer Prize-winning play that was based on a novel by Edith Wharton. - FREE

Exhibit Opening - Alexander Hamilton on Reclaiming America - 7:00 p.m. - JCCL Kitzinger Community Room
Rediscover one of the most often overlooked Founders at the opening reception for the traveling exhibit, "Alexander Hamilton: The Man Who Made Modern America." Historian Bill Chrystal portrays the life of Alexander Hamilton and his meteoric rise from an orphaned 15-year-old immigrant to George Washington's aide and a pivotal figure in the founding of the country. Hamilton foresaw the complex modern society the U.S. would become and was a driving force in creating the financial, political and legal systems that have shaped the nation for more than 200 years. The reception and program are free, thanks to a generous grant from the Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library. More events will be featured in coming months. In Concert - TRADOC Brass Quintet - 7:30 p.m. - WL Theatre 
Music for brass instruments will fill the Williamsburg Library Theatre in this free concert by Army musicians from the Training and Doctrine Command (TRADOC) Band at Fort Monroe. While the concert is free, tickets are required to guarantee admission. Up to four free tickets per person can be picked up at the Program Services desk of the Williamsburg Library, 515 Scotland Street during normal library hours beginning June 16. Tickets cannot be reserved over the phone.
