The troubled life of Native American sports star Jim Thorpe (Burt Lancaster) is portrayed in this earnest biopic. Thorpe, a superb athlete, rose from poverty to win two gold medals in Track at the 1912 Olympic games. Unfortunately, his later career as a professional athlete was undermined by personal problems and a fondness for alcohol.

Gary Cooper is terrific playing baseball legend Lou Gehrig in this poignant film that was nominated for 11 Academy Awards. Gehrig was the star first baseman of the New York Yankees before being struck down by ALS, the degenerative nerve disease that today bears his name. Teresa Wright costars along with real life baseball greats Babe Ruth, Bill Dickey and Bob Meusel.

This lovely British movie based on a true story about the rivalry between two sprinters competing in the 1924 Olympics won four Academy Awards, including Best Picture. Eric Liddell was a devout Protestant who ran track for personal religious reasons. Harold Abrahams was Jewish and competed to overcome class prejudice and anti-semitism. The film stars Ben Cross and Ian Charleson and was directed by Hugh Hudson.
