Celtic Film - Mary of Scotland (unrated, 1936) - 7:00 p.m. - WL Theatre
Mary Stuart returns to Scotland to rule as queen, to the chagrin of Elizabeth I of England who finds her a dangerous rival. This John Ford-directed film stars Katharine Hepburn, Fredric March and John Carradine.  The Library presents the Celtic Film Series in cooperation with the local chapters of the St. Andrews Society and the Ladies Ancient Order of Hibernians. The series explores the history, drama and quirky humor of films made in or about Scotland and Ireland. - FREE

A woman seeking a divorce (Ginger Rogers) flees to a beach resort with her husband and a pesky suitor (Fred Astaire) in pursuit. The plot is silly, but the sets, costumes, music and dancing are divine. Songs include Cole Porter's "Night and Day" and "The Continental" which won the first ever Academy Award for Best Song. - FREE

Hollywood's Golden Year of 1939 saw the first pairing of Mickey Rooney and Judy Garland. Mickey Moran (Rooney) wants to help his struggling family by putting on a big vaudeville musical with the help of his girlfriend Patsy (Garland) and some neighbor kids. Problems arise but the show must go on. Busby Berkeley directed from a script based on a Broadway stage play by Rodgers and Hart. - FREE

ONE Town Hall featuring Congressman Wittman: A Conversation on Global Poverty - 3:00 p.m. - WL Theatre
An opportunity for the public to meet with 1st district Congressman Rob Wittman to discuss his plans to address international development issues in the 111th Congress. The program is co-sponsored by ONE, a grassroots campaign and advocacy organization backed by more than 2 million people from around the world and every walk of life who are committed to the fight against extreme poverty and preventable disease, particularly in Africa (www.one.org). An American expatriate in Paris finds himself torn between two women in this fine musical that features the remarkable talents of Gene Kelly, Vincente Minnelli, Alan Jay Lerner, George Gershwin, Cedric Givvons and Orry-Kelly. The film, which costars Leslie Caron, Nina Foch and Oscar Levant is best known for its amazing 17-minute dance sequence that brings some impressionist paintings to vivid life. - FREE

As a young Air Force officer, James Heaphey went undercover to secure a site for nuclear retaliation against the Soviet Union. His assigned location: French Morocco. His mission: get the base without either the French or the Soviets finding out. To do that, he had to travel the back alleys of Casablanca and Marrakech, the villages of the Atlas Mountains and the remote Foreign Legion posts in the Saraha, trying to wrest Morocco from the French. - FREE

Robbin Thompson in Concert - 7:30 p.m. - WL Theatre
Robbin is an award-winning Virginia singer-songwriter and national recording artist who has been predominant on the national music scene since the early 1970s. He was the lead singer in the Bruce Springsteen band "Steel Mill," won the American Song Festival twice, and has recorded 12 albums to date. Thompson, along with friend Steve Bassett, authored the song, "Sweet Virginia Breeze," which is considered by many to be the unofficial state song of Virginia. He has also written and recorded songs with the Eagles bassist Timothy B. Schmit, who also sings harmonies on many of Robbin's recordings. This concert is supported by a grant from the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Tickets are $15 for adults, $13 for Friends of WRL and students, and $7 for those under 16.
