A big game hunter (Stewart Granger) heads into an unmapped area of Africa at the behest of a woman (Deborah Kerr) searching for her husband who disappeared while looking for the legendary diamond mines of King Solomon. This scenic film, based on H. Rider Haggard's rousing Victorian adventure tale, was filmed on location in the African Congo and won an Oscar for its vibrant cinematography. - FREE

 

3rd Thursdays @ Your Library: Tobacco, Trade and Tragedy - 7:00 p.m. - WL Schell Room
Jamestown's link to the world was forged with rope and sail. How did seaborne trade influence Virginia's growth? Retired Coast Guard Captain Richard Asaro will speak about the development of cross-Atlantic trade, how it was practiced in the colonial era, and how the tobacco economy contributed to the rise of slavery in America. Captain Asaro, employed by the Coast Guard for 34 years, now teaches courses on leadership and celestial navigation through the Coast Guard Auxiliary. He also volunteers at the Mariners' Museum and Jamestown Settlement as a docent and lecturer. - FREE
