100 Years of Williamsburg Regional Library

The Williamsburg Regional Library celebrates a century of service to the community with a free exhibit of artifacts and photos in the Williamsburg Library Gallery, 515 Scotland Street, now through September 7.  The video component from the exhibit can also be viewed online.  The exhibit includes some books from 1910 as well as other artifacts and photos related to the library's 100 years of educating, enriching, entertaining and informing the greater Williamsburg community.

Library service began in 1909 when a 50-book traveling library from the Virginia State Library occupied the front hallway of the St. George Tucker House on Market Square.  Mary Coleman, who lived in the St. George Tucker House, and Anne Chapman were both members of the Williamsburg Civic League, the civic improvement group made up largely of women that spearheaded the library effort.  The first stand-alone building for the Williamsburg Free Public Library came in March 1910 when a collection of 240 books was moved to the Market Square Tavern.  Over the next 23 years the library moved five more times before coming to rest for 40 years in the Nicholson-Tyler Office on the corner of Francis and South England Streets.  Williamsburg Regional Library now includes the Williamsburg Library (opened in 1973), Mobile Library Services (formerly the Bookmobile, started in 1980) and the James City County Library (1996).
