January 13 - March 26, 2010:
James City County, 7770 Croaker RoadVisions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery
The Williamsburg Regional Library is one of 40 libraries nationwide selected to host this traveling exhibit. "Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery" focuses on astronomy through the ages - from Galileo's initial findings to the latest results of the Hubble Space Telescope. The exhibit vividly illustrates 400 years of growth in our knowledge of not just planets, stars, nebulae and galaxies, but also the size and scale of the universe in both space and time.
A variety of programs will be held at both libraries throughout the exhibit period, beginning with the day-long "Exploring Space with NASA" on Saturday, January 23 at the James City County Library. Astronaut Susan Still-Kilrain, a naval aviator who has flown on two Shuttle flights and traveled nearly 8 million miles in space, will speak and show films of her missions at 11:00 a.m. and again at 1:30 p.m. Throughout the day a variety of hands-on activities will be held for children conducted by NASA educators and staff of the Virginia Air and Space Center.
Admission is free and no reservations are needed.
"Visions of the Universe: Four Centuries of Discovery" is presented by the Space Telescope Science Institute, Baltimore, Maryland, the Smithsonian Astrophysical Observatory, Cambridge, Massachusetts, and the American Library Association, Chicago, Illinois, through funding from the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.
Williamsburg Regional Library is proud to be a participant in the Discover the Arts map and website where you can explore more arts venues and artists in the greater Williamsburg area.
