“Your Obedient Servant” James Monroe’s 1819 Presidential Tour of the Southern States
The last president of the revolutionary generation, James Monroe won the nation’s highest office in 1816 and 1820. He made three consecutive national tours (1817-1819) during his first term. He reached out to the South in 1819 with an agenda dominated by his administration’s interest in defense, frontier settlements, Indian affairs, and education.
