Anyone who resides in or owns a business or real property in or is employed by a city or county that funds the Williamsburg Regional Library may obtain a library card. We also offer cards to William & Mary faculty, students, and staff, business owners in Williamsburg, James City County, and York County, and WJCC teachers if you don’t live in the area. Ask us for more details if you fit into one of those categories. Card privileges may be restricted.*

Signing up is as easy as bringing in a picture ID and verification of your address. You can also use the form below to start signing up for a card and we will process your request as a digital library card that you will be able to use for 30 days. We will contact you with the card number that you can use to check out ebooks, digital magazines, and digital audiobooks, stream and download music, and stream video. To place holds and checkout physical items, you will need to finalize your account by presenting picture identification and proof of current address within 30 days of applying online for a card.

  • You can either stop by one of our library locations to finalize your card in-person, or you can email a scan/photo of your picture ID and proof of address to
  • Most users present a driver’s license, but if you have just moved here, you can use a bill, lease agreement, or closing documents to show current address.
  • Children may be identified by a parent or guardian with photo ID and proof of current address.

In the form below you can choose to have a physical card mailed to you or you can install the WRL app on your phone and store your card there.

NEW: Account PINs

On February 1, 2022, WRL started keeping your data and personal information safer by adding PINs to user accounts.
When accessing anything that requires a library card number, you will also need a PIN as well. This includes online access to your account through our website or app, self-checkout machines, digital collections, databases, printing and more.
The default PINs will be the last four digits of your phone number, but you will be able to change it to any four-digit number of your choosing.
Please see a staff member if you have questions about this or need assistance as we roll this out.
