They were used in a variety of ways to inform, uplift, and unite the race north and south of the Mason-Dixon Line.  Locating available resources is vital to the African American research process. The presenter, Tim Pinnick, is an article writer, national speaker, and author of the book, “Finding and Using African American Newspapers”.
