Author Visit: Gary Powers, Jr., Spy Pilot
June 21, 2019 @ 7:00 pm - 8:00 pm
The 1960 downing of the American U-2 spy plane piloted by Francis Gary Powers over the Soviet Union was a pivotal event of the Cold War. Eventually released, Powers was exonerated of wrongdoing while imprisoned by the KGB, but he continued to face criticism until his death in 1977. Now, using personal files and recently-declassified documents about the U-2 program, his son, Francis Gary Powers, Jr., and historian Keith Dunnavant revisit this fascinating piece of Cold War history.
Gary Powers, Jr., founder and chairman emeritus of The Cold War Museum, will discuss the controversy that surrounded his father, what the family has done to set the record straight, and his role as a consultant for Spielberg’s 2015 movie Bridge of Spies, which portrays his father’s exchange for Soviet spy Rudolf Abel in 1962.
