Jane Austen holds a special place in the hearts of fans around the world. In this talk by Dr. Sarah Glosson, hear the stories of a charismatic group of mid-twentieth century Austen enthusiasts who collected books, did research, made scrapbooks, and undertook pilgrimages to Austen’s homes in England before they became tourist destinations. Along the way, these individuals formed life-long friendships, eventually founding the Jane Austen Society of North America (JASNA). They left behind rich collections now preserved in archives. Hear their stories and learn how their love for Jane Austen left a lasting impression on the way today’s Austen fans gather to celebrate their favorite author.

Sarah Glosson is the author of Performing Jane: A Cultural History of Jane Austen Fandom (LSU Press, 2020). She is currently the Director of the Arts & Sciences Graduate Center at William & Mary.
