This month we’re discussing All Creatures Great and Small by James Herriot. Fresh out of Glasgow Veterinary College, the young and idealistic James “Alf” Wight took the only job he could find: assistant to a veterinary surgeon with a rural practice on the remote moors and dales of Yorkshire. His autobiography under the name James Herriot became a beloved classic and a legendary BBC series, newly adapted for PBS’s Masterpiece Theatre. Chronicling his real education in the field, Herriot writes with humor and compassion about his encounters with working farm animals and pampered pets as well as their eccentric owners.

Real People/Real Stories explores the best in nonfiction history, biography, science, nature, and the arts.
