This month we’re discussing Hidden Valley Road by Robert Kolker. The Galvins, with 12 “baby boomer” children, were one of the first families studied by the NIH in hopes of better understanding schizophrenia. As six of the twelve children, one after another, were diagnosed with the disorder, their experiences ran the gamut of shifting medical opinion and treatments. A powerful and compassionate family biography as well as a medical detective journey, this book has earned a place on many “Best of 2020” lists.
Real People/Real Stories explores the best in nonfiction history, biography, science, nature, and the arts.
