Real People/Real Stories Book Discussion: Spy Pilot (SPECIAL DAY, SPECIAL GUEST!)
June 21, 2019 @ 2:00 pm
Note: we’re meeting on Friday this month, and we’ll be joined by Francis Gary Powers, Jr.! This month we’re reading Spy Pilot, the new biography of Francis Gary Powers. Powers was the U2 pilot famously shot down over the Soviet Union while on a reconnaissance and intelligence mission. He was the focus of tensions at a time when the United States and the Soviet Union were deep in the Cold War. Eventually released in exchange for the Soviet spy Rudolf Abel, Powers returned to the United States lauded as a hero to some, as a coward to others.
Using personal files, recordings, interviews, and declassified materials, Powers’s son, Gary Jr., and historian Keith Dunnavant have reconstructed the event and its repercussions in more detail than has ever been available. They also write about the aftermath of Powers’s homecoming, the rest of his life, and the journey of a son trying to understand his father.
We will be joined by Francis Gary Powers, Jr. for the discussion. We’ll also be passing out copies of Midnight in Chernobyl, our discussion title for July.
