Now in its 21st year, the Throwback Thursday Film Series screens a variety of classic movies for an adult audience.

February Theme: 1950s Sci-Fi 

February 1: War of the Worlds (1953) G 

A small town in California is the beachhead for an alien invasion from Mars in this striking version of H. G. Wells’s classic science fiction novel. Gene Barry headlines the cast but the real stars are the Academy Award-winning special effects. 1hr 25min 

February 8: Them! (1954) NR 

Atomic testing in New Mexico creates a nest of giant ants that threaten the city of Los Angeles. James Whitmore and James Arness star in this excellent sci-fi film, widely considered to be the best of the “Giant Bug” movies of the 1950s. 1hr 34min 

February 15: The Day the Earth Stood Still (1951) G 

The people of Earth are threatened with destruction unless they learn to live peacefully with other planets in the universe. The story, acting, theremin music, and special effects make this critically-lauded science fiction film something special. Michael Rennie, Patricia Neal, and Hugh Marlowe star under the direction of Robert Wise. “Klaatu Barada Nikto!” 1hr 32min 

February 22: Forbidden Planet (1956) G 

In the 23rd century, the crew of a starship are sent to check up on the colonists of planet Altair IV. They find two survivors, the remnant of an ancient civilization, and an invisible but deadly creature. This superb and influential sci-fi film stars Walter Pidgeon, Anne Francis, Leslie Nielsen, and Robbie the Robot. 1hr 38min 

February 29: Invaders from Mars (1953) NR 

A young boy sees a flying saucer landing near his town. The people who investigate come back looking the same but acting… strange. Can the child with the help of a few locals stop this alien invasion of Earth? The great art director William Cameron Menzies directed this paranoid thriller that stars Helena Carter, Arthur Franz, and Jimmy Hunt. 1hr 18min
