Now in its 18th year, the Thursday Afternoon Film Series screens a variety of classic and contemporary movies for an adult audience.  

August Theme: Summertime   

August 5: Summer Stock (1950), 2-4 p.m. 

  • This musical-comedy features Judy Garland as a small-town farmer who finds romance with the director (Gene Kelly) of a traveling theatrical troupe. This was Garland’s last film at MGM. NR 

August 12: A Summer Place (1959), 2-4:15 p.m. 

  • A young couple (Sandra Dee, Troy Donahue) and their parents find love and scandal on a scenic island in Maine. The movie’s memorable theme song was #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart for nine weeks and won the Grammy for Song of the Year. NR 

August 19: Come September (1961), 2-4 p.m. 

  • Rock Hudson plays a wealthy man who discovers that his villa in Italy is being used as a summer hotel for amorous teens. Gina Lollobrigida, Sandra Dee, and Bobby Darin costar in this romantic comedy. Darin and Dee fell in love and soon married while working on this film. NR 

August 26: Summer and Smoke (1961), 2-4 p.m.  

  • A shy spinster (Geraldine Page) secretly loves a handsome doctor (Laurence Harvey) who only has eyes for the local bad girl (Rita Moreno) in this drama from playwright Tennessee Williams. NR
