November Theme: The Big Con

November 4: The Ladykillers (2004)  2-3:50 p.m. 

  • Tom Hanks stars in this comedy directed by the Coen Brothers about an eccentric Southern professor whose plans to rob a casino are threatened by his vexatious, elderly landlady (Irma P. Hall). R

November 11: Elmer Gantry (1960)  2-4:30 p.m. 

  • Burt Lancaster turns in a powerful performance as a charming con man who exploits a traveling revival show for money and the affection of beautiful Sister Sharon (Jean Simmons) until his past catches up to him. Based on the novel by Sinclair Lewis, the film was directed by Richard Brooks. NR 

November 18: A Fish Called Wanda (1988)  2-3:50 p.m. 

  • In this wild comedy, four strangers team up to steal a valuable diamond and then proceed to double-cross each other to keep the stone for themselves. John Cleese, Jamie Lee Curtis, and Kevin Kline costar under the direction of Charles Crichton. R

Tuesday, November 23: The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999)  2-4:20 p.m. 

  • A schemer (Matt Damon) insinuates himself into the good graces of a wealthy couple in Europe and will do anything to maintain the connection. Based on the book by Patricia Highsmith, this tense thriller stars Jude Law and Gwyneth Paltrow under the direction of Anthony Minghella. R
