Now in its 18th year, the Thursday Afternoon Film Series screens a variety of classic and contemporary movies for an adult audience.  

June Theme: Art & Artists 

June 3: Portrait of Jennie (1948), 2-3:30 p.m. 

  • A struggling artist (Joseph Cotten) finds love and inspiration with a mysterious girl (Jennifer Jones) in this eerie romantic drama produced by David O. Selznick. NR 

June 10: Art of the Steal (2009), 2-3:45 p.m.  

  • This fascinating documentary follows the vicious battle that ensued for control of philanthropist Albert Barnes’ 25 billion-dollar collection of modern and post-impressionist art following the death of its long-time curator in the late 1980s. NR 

June 17: The Moon and Sixpence (1942), 2-3:35 p.m. 

  • Loosely based on the life Paul Gauguin, a businessman (George Sanders) abandons his family and runs off to Tahiti to become an artist in this film directed by Albert Lewin and based on the book by W. Somerset Maugham. NR 

June 24: Goya’s Ghosts (2006), 2-4 p.m. 

  • In this historical drama directed by Milos Forman, the painter Francisco Goya (Stellan Skarsgard) confronts forces of the Spanish Inquisition in an effort to free his artist’s model (Natalie Portman). R
