This month we’re discussing The Exiles by Christina Baker Kline. Three women meet at a crossroads in history: the English colonization of Australia with convicted prisoners. Two of them, one pregnant by an employer’s son, one convicted of stealing a spoon, are sent to Van Diemen’s Land aboard the horrific ship Medea. The third is an Aboriginal woman taken from her family as a social experiment by the governor’s wife. Kline uses history to examine the roles of womanhood, servitude, immigration, and colonialism.

Turning Pages explores classic and contemporary fiction and nonfiction from around the world. This group will sample critically acclaimed and prize-winning titles and open and inclusive discussion.
