June 16: Civics or Civic Education: Same or Different?

What can you do during this period of unrest in America — in addition to voting? What does civics mean to you? Do you need a refresher crash course? Start by learning in this webinar from the Williamsburg Area League of Women Voters, co-sponsored by Williamsburg Regional Library. It will cover the basics of civics, some naturalization test questions, civic duties, civic education resources for teachers and parents, and how to be a better informed citizen in a democracy.

July 21: Voting Rights in America

How have voting rights in our Constitution evolved since 1787? What did our Founding Fathers envision about voting? What is the history of the power of voting in America? This second Civics 101 webinar from the Williamsburg Area League of Women Voters, co-sponsored by the Williamsburg Regional Library, will answer these questions, review the effects of Jim Crow laws, and prepare voters for the recent changes in election laws in Virginia.

August 18: Women’s Suffrage in America

Who were the women who fought the long battle for suffrage until the 19th Amendment was ratified in 1920? And what was the untold story of women of color who were marginalized in this suffrage movement? The Williamsburg Area League of Women Voters reminds us that women were not GIVEN the right to vote. They fought for it for 72 years and more.
