This month we’re discussing The Suspicions of Mr. Wicher by Kate Summerscale. This tale traces the 1860 murder of a young child whose death launched a national obsession with detection throughout England, nearly destroyed the career of a top Scotland Yard investigator, and inspired the birth of modern detective fiction. Mr. Whicher was the basis for the creation of Sergeant Cuff, Wilkie Collins’ fictional detective in The Moonstone.

WhoDunnits is a discussion group devoted to mysteries that follows a yearlong program of books and movies around a single topic. This year it’s Sherlock Holmes’s big brothers — who were the authors who created the detective genre before Conan Doyle came along?
