WhoDunnits Book Discussion: The Janissary Tree
January 7, 2020 @ 7:00 pm
WhoDunnits is a discussion group devoted to mysteries that follows a yearlong program of books and movies around a single topic. This year we’re taking a look at International Mysteries, both contemporary and historical. It’s murder worldwide! This month we’ll be discussing The Janissary Tree. Eunuch Yashim Togalu is called by the sultan of the Ottoman Empire to solve a string of murders which have sown chaos in his court. Moving from harem to the back alleys of 19th-century Istanbul, Yashim discovers a possible plot connected to the Janissaries, elite warriors of the Empire who were suppressed when they became too powerful. Historian Jason Goodwin immerses readers in the sights, sounds, and smells of the city (rice, currants, and pine nuts in a delicious stew, anyone?) while turning an accurate portrayal of imperial politics into an intriguing mystery.
We’ll also be passing out copies of February’s title, The Shape of Water.
