Volunteers help keep the library a great resource for the community. If you are looking for a great place to spend several hours a week, give WRL a try. The library has two locations where you can volunteer.

  • Circulation Services is seeking volunteers to help with our Seed Exchange Program
  • Youth Services is seeking teen volunteer puppeteers and art studio volunteers
  • Adult Services is seeking library event ambassador volunteers

When completing a volunteer application, you must reference the available position(s) for which you are applying.

Remember, every fifty hours given as a library volunteer is recognized by membership in the    Fifty Hour Club!

The Circulation Services division is responsible for the library’s check-out, check-in, and shelving operations. Circulation Services is looking for volunteers to support the seed exchange program and to maintain the appearance of the shelves by shelf-reading and on an as needed basis help with shelving materials.

Williamsburg Regional Library is seeking volunteers to support library graphics and design projects on a project-based, as needed basis, helping to promote and support library programming and events.

Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library Foundation is an organization dedicated to making the library a better place for users. Sorter volunteers provide hours of help with the Book Nooks and other book sales. Some positions will be for substitute sorters who after training can “fill in” as needed (a weekly commitment is not required). Volunteers must be Friends members.

The Youth Services division provides collections, programming, and reference and reader’s advisory services for the youngest children learning to read and older children reading to learn. Programming includes author visits and entertainment that is both enjoyable and educational. The Youth Services division serves children of all ages.

Volunteers who enjoy an active, exuberant environment may wish to help in the Kiwanis Kids Idea Studio.

The Bookmobiles extend library services beyond the walls of the buildings and out into the community. This volunteer assists the sewing instructor with regular sewing classes held in Williamsburg Library building, James City County Library building, or WRL outreach program sites. If you enjoy sewing and helping other, supporting these classes as a library volunteer might be a good fit for you.

WRL’s Teen Advisory Group (ages 13 to 18) meets regularly to share ideas for teen materials and services and to assist with a variety of projects and special events. On your application please include 1 to 2 sentences under “Additional Skills or Interests” about why you want to participate in TAG. Adult services is looking for computer class instructor volunteers. Computer class instructor volunteers teach classes on various computer topics. A Library Event Ambassador is a friendly, welcoming source of information for participants of larger-scale library events. If you enjoy creating with various type of equipment consider applying to be a Makerspace volunteer.

The Technical Services division is responsible for receiving, processing, and cataloging all library materials. Technical Services is looking for volunteers to help process books and other print materials so the items can be added to the library collections. Volunteer work exclusively at the James City County Library.
