Volunteers help keep the library a great resource for the community. If you are looking for a great place to spend several hours a week, give WRL a try. The library has two locations where you can volunteer. Review the available volunteer positions listed below, read the WRL Volunteer Policy, and then submit an application online or download an application and return it to a public service desk at any library location.

The Circulation Services division is responsible for the library’s check-out, check-in, and shelving operations. Circulation Services is looking for volunteers to support the seed exchange program and to maintain the appearance of the shelves by shelf-reading and on an as needed basis help with shelving materials.

Williamsburg Regional Library is seeking volunteers to support library graphics and design projects on a project-based, as needed basis, helping to promote and support library programming and events.

Friends of Williamsburg Regional Library Foundation is an organization dedicated to making the library a better place for users. Sorter volunteers provide hours of help with the Book Nooks and other book sales. Some positions will be for substitute sorters who after training can “fill in” as needed (a weekly commitment is not required). Volunteers must be Friends members.

Book Nook Sorter Volunteer (limited positions available)

The Youth Services division provides collections, programming, and reference and reader’s advisory services for the youngest children learning to read and older children reading to learn. Programming includes author visits and entertainment that is both enjoyable and educational. The Youth Services division serves children of all ages.

We will be recruiting for all the 2023 Summer Reading volunteer positions later this spring. Williamsburg Regional Library. Volunteer applicants must have completed seventh grade to be eligible to volunteer.

Volunteers who enjoy an active, exuberant environment may wish to help in the Kiwanis Kids Idea Studio.

Teen Puppeteer Volunteer

The Bookmobiles extend library services beyond the walls of the buildings and out into the community. The first Saturday of each month WRL Bookmobiles visit the Abram Frink, Jr. Community Center (8901 Pocahontas Trail, Williamsburg, VA 23185) to conduct sewing classes. If you enjoy sewing and helping other, supporting these classes as a library volunteer might be a good fit for you.

Teen Advisory Group (TAG)

WRL’s teen volunteer group meets regularly to share ideas for teen materials and services and to assist with a variety of tasks. Application for 2023-2024 will open on June 1st and be accepted through August 15th. Adult services is looking for computer class instructor volunteers.  Computer class instructor volunteers teach classes on various computer topics.

The Technical Services division is responsible for receiving, processing, and cataloging all library materials. Technical Services is looking for volunteers to help process books and other print materials so the items can be added to the library collections. Volunteer work exclusively at the James City County Library.
